Photos: Dory Fishermen
Photo essays make statements about beach issues in California.
It's nice to simply take pictures and spread the "love" but sometimes important issues need exposure and often one picture may not tell the whole story.
Plight of the Dory Fishermen
With new fishing regulations and dwindling profits, the small dory fishing boats and their owners have questioned whether it's worth continuing traditions.
Tell the Story in Pictures
With the popularity of smaller phones and devices for viewing pictures and information, it's challenging to tell a story. It can be done, but you must use your space carefully when selecting pictures. In this photo collage we're not trying to show the plight of the dory fisherman. We're simply showing you dory boats, a sign and dory fisherman cleaning and selling his catch of the day. The photos were taken in Newport Beach where one of the few remaining such operations and fleets existed when we took these photos several years ago.
The technicalities of putting together photo collages involves your alloted space and how much you can fit into it. Considerations include vertical versus horizontal formats, and size. If you include too many images the story may be lost so it involves some give and take. Many compromises are made when creating photos collages. Don't forget that trial and error is also a big part of the equation. Does the overall effect look right? If not, scrap it and try something else.
