California Beach Holidays
It's hard to come up with a new, creative idea for your holiday photo. Many people head to the beach to take pictures in their Santa hats. Why not get Santa to come to the beach, doing something unique and beach-related?
We started taking pictures before sunset and the lighting was completely different with the ocean and background sky nearly washed out (white). As the sun goes down you have approx. 20-30 minutes of lighting to work with. Even when you think it is too dark to show up, the sky will often surprise you and appear quite colorful in the pictures. If you can bring a battery operated palm tree or an icon of holiday celebrating, the extra props are an added bonus. Be sure to have a camera with strong enough flash to light up the subjects, but if your flash is weak, then stay close (approx. 5-8 feet.)
Merry Christmas!
Holiday portraits at California beaches are just one fun way to improve your craft as photographer. Care to give it a try? Positive results are one of the best gifts you can give yourself.
Tripod May Help
- If you're looking for the dynamo shot with the ocean in the background, apply techniques used 150 years ago when photography was new and came in vogue. Subjects must remain still and that's not an easy accomplishment unless they are seated or holding onto someone or something. This effort should be a backup experiment only... unless you have done a trial run with your subjects.

We love the holidays here at California Beach Photos.com! It is one of the most enjoyable seasons to document -- especially at the beach.
